About this grant
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint provides one-on-one mentoring to disadvantaged children in Genesee County through a variety of targeted programs. This grant will support the Flint replication of a national initiative of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which develops mentorship in the African-American community through African-American fraternities and sororities (more commonly referred to as Black Greek Letter Organizations). In 1991, the grantee and Alpha Phi Alpha partnered to establish the first Black Greek Letter Organization mentorship program in conjunction with a national mentorship organization. As the lead agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint will coordinate efforts for the Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies and the local affiliates of the National Pan Hellenic Council, which oversees the Black Greek Letter Organizations in Genesee, Saginaw, and Ingham counties, to increase their involvement in formal mentorship activities.
