About this grant
The UNESCO Oliver Tambo Chair of Human Rights, based at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, was established through funding by UNESCO to advance human rights, respect for democratic values, peace, and social justice. This project builds on another Mott-funded project implemented by the chair entitled "Democratic Governance and Participatory Development at the Local Level", which successfully brought together municipal and traditional leaders to work harmoniously within the Nkonkobe municipality. The project trained traditional and community leaders, municipal councilors, and community-based groups on various aspects of governance. This grant will help the chair to build the capacity of women and youth to meaningfully participate in local governance and decisionmaking processes that affect their lives. Through training, it will also enable them to take advantage of emerging economic opportunities and to access employment, in order to improve the quality of their lives.
