About this grant

This grant will support Urgewald’s efforts to establish strong, binding environmental and social standards for international financial institutions and to garner ongoing public support for responsible and accountable financial institutions. To achieve these goals, the grantee undertakes research, education, and advocacy efforts with a global network of local communities, nongovernmental organizations, and other partners. During the previous grant, the grantee helped shape the human rights policy of the German ministry of development to ensure that vulnerable groups and the environment are not negatively impacted by large-scale infrastructure and energy investments. During this grant period, the grantee will undertake policy advocacy efforts to ensure progressive German policies and decisions at international financial institutions, particularly related to the World Bank safeguard and extractive industry reviews; monitor Germany’s export credit agency; and organize dialogues with private banks on developing policies and practices that support sustainable development.
