About this grant

This grant will enable Career Alliance, Inc., to continue the Earn & Learn Initiative in Flint and Genesee County targeting disconnected youth ages 18 to 24, unemployed adults (particularly minority males), and exoffenders reentering the workforce. In the first phase of this initiative, the grantee provided 278 individuals with training, subsidized employment, and credentialing opportunities in career pathways such as construction and healthcare. The initiative is designed to spark immediate entry-level work opportunities while simultaneously increasing participants’ skills and helping them manage barriers to success. Recommended support will enable the grantee to assist current and an additional 150 participants in maintaining and/or enhancing their work skills to make the transition from subsidized employment to more permanent job placements. The Open Society Foundations’ (formerly Open Society Institute) investment in the Earn & Learn Initiative will be matched 1:1 by both the Mott Foundation and the state of Michigan.
