About this grant
The program goal is to strengthen the role of nonprofits in Turkey in promoting civic engagement on issues of justice and accountability. The Truth, Justice and Memory Studies Association will focus on empowering local human rights and other nonprofits working on documenting and raising awareness of Turkey’s history of human rights abuses, particularly the 30-year, ongoing Kurdish conflict. Specifically, the grantee will work collaboratively with other nonprofits in Turkey to establish common standards and approaches for recording and retrieving data on human rights violations; facilitate the sharing and exchange of data among nonprofits in the field; promote cooperation on advocacy, monitoring, and dissemination; and raise awareness of international experiences and practices. During 2012-2013, the grantee conducted field research on human rights abuses, published two reports based on its research, supported four local human rights nonprofits, and strengthened its staff and organizational capacities. Based in Istanbul, the grantee works throughout Turkey.
