About this grant
The Centre for Community Justice and Development was established in 2012 and works to further access to justice and to protect human rights through the law. It supports advice offices that provide legal advice and related services to poor people living in rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. Prior to its establishment in 2012, the grantee operated as a project of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. It served as an umbrella body to 15 advice offices and provided them with financial and material resources. The aim of this project is to train and support the 15 advice offices to operate independently. Over the next two years, the grantee will assist the advice offices to register as independent entities and train them on fundraising, financial management, administration, planning, and reporting. The goal is to enable the individual advice offices to attract funding from local sources. The grantee will also provide backup legal services to the advice offices and collate their cases through a central case management system. This grant has been made possible by a partnership with Atlantic Philanthropies in support of the community advice office sector.
