About this grant

The project goal is to develop the community foundation field and strengthen infrastructure for community foundations in Europe. To this end, Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen, in partnership with the Center for Philanthropy in Slovakia and UK Community Foundations, and in coordination with the European Foundation Centre, will manage and develop the European Community Foundation Initiative. Working with its partners, the grantee will increase the level and quality of community philanthropy in Europe, strengthen the capacity of existing community foundations and their associations, promote the community foundation concept and facilitate the establishment of new community foundations, and strengthen the visibility and representation of community foundations vis-à-vis the public sector on the national and European levels. The grantee was established in 1948 with the mission to develop the foundation sector in Germany and strengthen civic engagement. The grantee is an umbrella organization of more than 20,000 foundations, and since 2004 has managed a national program for community foundation development, which has supported the establishment of over 300 community foundations to date. The grantee is based in Berlin, Germany.
