About this grant
This grant will partially support the Harold Alfond College Challenge Program Evaluation. Created in 2008 as a pilot program in Portland, Maine, the Harold Alfond College Challenge automatically awards a $500 grant to every child born in Maine, as both an incentive to catalyze educational savings and to help more children develop college aspirations. Given its visibility and potential for replicability, evaluating its effects on children, families, and communities has implications not only for Maine, but for the nation as a whole. The anticipated findings could prove instrumental in advancing children’s savings account policies and practices. The Alfond Scholarship Foundation was created in 2008 to implement and manage the college challenge program.
