About this grant

The Association of University Legal Aid Institutions Trust promotes access to justice for poor and marginalized communities through fostering partnerships between legal aid institutions attached to universities in South Africa and community-based advice offices. Past support has enabled the grantee to make small grants to advice offices, conduct workshops to inform people about their rights and how to access them, train and mentor paralegals working in community-based advice offices on various aspects of the law, governance, and office administration, provide backup legal services to paralegals in advice offices, and assist poor people with free legal advice and related services. This grant will continue to enable university law clinics to provide backup legal services to community-based advice offices and poor communities. It will also provide structured financial support to carefully selected advice offices in order to build capacity, provide the necessary infrastructure, and assist in developing a sustainable network of legal service provision.
