About this grant
This renewal grant will provide support to the Sphinx Organization to offer a continuum of music instruction to underserved students in Flint, Michigan. The Sphinx Overture program, which introduces students to classical music and violin, serves all Flint public elementary schools. In partnership with YouthQuest and the Crim Fitness Foundation, the program will provide students with free, afterschool group violin lessons. Music education supports cognitive stimulation and learning, and literacy skill development. Through a partnership with the Flint Institute of Music, students from the program will be eligible for more advanced violin lessons and classes at no cost. In addition, Sphinx Overture students and their families have access to a range of other cultural experiences and enrichment activities including artist-in-residence workshops and performances.
