About this grant
Midwest Environmental Advocates is the only nonprofit environmental law center in Wisconsin that provides legal and technical services directly to community members seeking to protect clean water. With previous support from the Mott Foundation, the grantee has provided legal and technical support to citizens throughout Wisconsin’s Great Lakes basin on a range of issues including protecting surface and groundwater from pollution, preventing harmful diversions of Great Lakes water through implementing and defending the Great Lakes Compact, and strengthening its organizational capacity by adding staff, strengthening ties to Native American tribes, and diversifying its board of directors. With renewed support, the grantee will provide legal and technical resources to support community-based efforts to protect drinking water in rural and urban communities, work to recalibrate Wisconsin water quality standards to account for increased precipitation due to climate change, hold governments accountable for preventing harmful diversions of Great Lakes water and protecting drinking water, and engage in an organization-wide strategic planning effort.
