Harold Alfond College Challenge Program Evaluation

About this grant

This grant will enable the Alfond Scholarship Foundation to continue with the second phase of the Harold Alfond College Challenge Program evaluation project. During the second phase of the project, the Alfond Foundation will use the research findings from the first phase to inform their program innovations and share findings with other children’s savings account programs and practitioners in efforts to build the field. Created in 2008 as a pilot program in Portland, Maine, the Alfond Scholarship automatically awards a $500 grant to every child born in Maine as an incentive to catalyze educational savings and to help more children aspire to attend college. With the replicability of the program and the extensive evaluation accomplished in the first phase of the program, the results have implications that will not only impact Maine, but children’s savings account programs across the country.
