About this grant
Established in 1993, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, is a growing international alliance of more than 12,000 members in 175 countries. The grantee’s mission is to strengthen civil society and citizen participation throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens’ freedom of association are challenged. Recent accomplishments include releasing annual State of Civil Society reports and maintaining the CIVICUS Monitor — a research tool to share reliable, timely data and analysis on civic space and publishing a special report entitled “Solidarity in the Time of COVID-19.” During the grant period, the grantee’s work will focus on defending civic freedoms and democratic values; strengthening the power of people to organize, mobilize and take action; and empowering a more accountable, effective and innovative civil society. The grantee’s main office is in Johannesburg, South Africa.
