About this grant

Founded in 2003, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is a coalition of over 100 U.S. and Canadian mayors and municipal officials dedicated to advancing the protection and restoration of the region and its water resources. The grantee helps its members integrate environmental, economic and social priorities into solutions that protect the Great Lakes — a resource that holds 20% of the world’s surface freshwater, provides drinking water for 40 million people and is the basis for the regional economy. With previous Mott Foundation support, the grantee has helped contribute to the development of measures that protect and advance the interests of the Great Lakes. Renewed funding will enable the grantee to continue to connect mayors across boundaries, supply municipal leaders with trusted and reliable information on a range of water issues and provide a platform for mayors to express their views in decision-making forums.
