About this grant

The Dullah Omar School for Paralegalism — a project of the Social Change Assistance Trust — was established in 2015 by a group of organizations working with community-based paralegals to provide coordinated training for young paralegals. The school provides accredited and non-accredited training to paralegals working in marginalized communities in South Africa. In the past, the school provided training to over 150 paralegals and exposed them to the current issues affecting the sector and access to justice more broadly. The school also provided opportunities for paralegals to connect and share experiences. The grantee is a grantmaking organization that promotes human rights and social justice by making grants to community advice offices and other local development agencies. The grantee supports groups that promote access to justice, gender equity, local economic development and human rights. During the current grant period, Social Change Assistance Trust will continue to implement the project by bringing together over 80 community-based paralegals to develop their skills, access theoretical and ideological education and increase their management capacity to lead the advice offices in their communities effectively.
