Great Lakes Collaboration in New York State

The Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper is one of the largest and most successful conservation organizations in the Great Lakes region and is a powerful voice in western New York. The state borders two of the lower Great Lakes — Erie and Ontario — and the St. Lawrence River. Nearly 45 percent of the state’s land area is in the Great Lakes Basin, with over 400 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. Despite the enormous economic and ecological importance of this resource, officials too often cede priority to downstate New York. In addition, many communities along this freshwater coast are becoming more vulnerable to an unpredictable and changing climate. With support from the Mott Foundation, the grantee will elevate the spotlight of the state on its Great Lakes assets and challenges and will assist in raising awareness to a changing climate and steps needed to enhance resiliency and adaptation.
