About this grant
This project will support engagement by the eight Great Lakes states and two provinces in the improvement and protection of the Great Lakes ecosystem. The improvements will help prevent invasive Silver, Black and Bighead Carp from entering the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Commission — a regional organization formed by the eight states and chartered by Congress — will lead the effort with the aid of a skilled facilitation firm. Invasive carp have migrated up the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers and threaten to breach an electric fence that is keeping them at bay. Scientists predict an invasion would harm rivers and lakes throughout the region. The effort is expected to lead to a long-term forum by which the states and provinces will work in cooperation with the United States Army Corps of Engineers on final design, construction and cost-share requirements for the project.
