About this grant
Indigenous peoples in the Amazon rely mainly on canoes and boats to travel in the rainforest and they generally lack access to clean electricity. Clearing forest for roads and other linear infrastructure brings deforestation and degradation in its wake. The Kara Solar Foundation and a growing group of partners have developed some of the first solar transport and electrification models built with and for Indigenous communities. Over the past grant period, the organization expanded its model from one Achuar community in Ecuador to Amazon Indigenous communities in Brazil, Peru and Suriname. This renewal will support Kara Solar to continue to replicate its model by developing the solar transport and electrification models, expanding training, innovating supply chains and fostering enterprises.
