About this grant

The Ohio Environmental Council is a major conservation advocacy organization in the state. With prior Mott support, the grantee focused attention on Lake Erie and its pollution problems and led efforts to improve Lake Erie communities by restoring coastal ecosystems. Recently, the grantee has turned more attention to drinking water, lead contamination, and affordability of clean, safe water supplies. An estimated 13 million people get drinking water from Lake Erie, a water source at risk due to massive toxic algae blooms that are especially prevalent in the Western Lake Erie basin. With this grant increase, the Ohio Environmental Council will develop, with partners, a report addressing phosphorus reductions and the financial costs of such reduction in the basin.
