About this grant

The state of California has led the Children’s Savings Account movement for over a decade, beginning with San Francisco’s Kindergarten-to-College initiative, which was the first municipal CSAs program in the country and has inspired dozens of replications across the state and nationally. Last summer, the state announced a universal statewide expansion of the California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program, funded with $2 billion of American Rescue Plan funds and expected to serve nearly four million participants. Foundation funding will help support outreach and education efforts that raise awareness of, and participation in, the expanded program and ensure the aspirational and educational benefits of CSAs reach the state’s most underserved communities. Coordinating and complimenting regional CSAs activity already underway in the state will be a key priority during the grant period. This project will be led by the ScholarShare Investment Board — the state agency charged with overseeing the state’s 529 college savings program and designing and implementing the CalKIDS effort.
