About this grant
The Vienna-based Institute for Human Sciences launched the Documenting Ukraine project in March 2022. By the end of February 2023, the grantee had supported more than 200 projects by Ukrainian scholars, creative professionals, journalists, public intellectuals, civil society leaders and archivists. These projects establish a factual record or bring meaning to events related to Russia’s war on Ukraine through artistic interpretation and intellectual reflection. In the next phase of the project, the grantee will provide: 1) an additional 200 grants; 2) oral history and archive development fellowships; 3) non-residential fellowships at the Center for Urban History in Lviv; 4) workshops to focus on the development and maintenance of an archive; and 5) an oral testimony project. Founded in 1982 — as a place for dissenting thinkers of Eastern Europe and prominent scholars from the West to meet in neutral Austria — the Institute for Human Sciences is an institute of advanced studies in the humanities and social sciences.
