About this grant

One in five Kenyans are estimated to lack access to electricity and instead rely on costly and polluting fossil fuels that exacerbate global climate change. This limited access to electricity services is particularly severe in Kenya’s rural areas, where 70% of the population depends on agriculture. The Kenya Climate Innovation Center is a Kenyan nonprofit organization that provides technical, operational and financial support services to empower farmers and entrepreneurs to respectively adopt and deliver innovative climate change solutions in East Africa. Through this project, the grantee plans to support 1,000 underserved entrepreneurs with business and technical support services to help increase access to productive use of solar energy services within the dairy and horticulture value chains. Additionally, the grantee will establish a revolving solar energy loan fund to improve access to affordable financing in the sector. The Kenya Climate Innovation Center will also create an independent distributed renewable energy ecosystem hub organization in Kenya for long-term organizational sustainability.
