About this grant

This grant to the United Way of Genesee County will assist with the creation of a business and operational plan for the McKenzie Patrice Croom Flint Community Lab, as well as staff training and professional development to implement the plan. Opened in 2020, the lab is a unique operation where a community-based water testing site is operated by and for Flint residents. The lab works with area youth, high school and college-aged students to collect water samples from residents to test for toxic substances such as lead and copper and to share information about test results and community resources. The lab is also staffed by a director who oversees operations and a chief chemist who implements the testing protocols and procedures while providing training for interns. The lab was certified by the state of Michigan in 2024.
