About this grant
The state of California has led the Children’s Savings Account movement for over a decade — beginning with San Francisco’s Kindergarten-to-College initiative — which was the first municipal Children’s Savings Account program in the country and has inspired dozens of replications across the state and nationally. In 2021, the grantee announced a universal statewide expansion of the California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program, expected to serve nearly four million participants. Mott Foundation funding will help support outreach and education efforts that raise awareness of, and participation in the expanded program and ensure the aspirational and educational benefits of Children’s Savings Account Outreach Initiative reach the state’s most underserved communities. This project will be led by the ScholarShare Investment Board — the state agency charged with overseeing the state’s 529 college savings program, and designing and implementing the CalKIDS effort.
