About this grant
The North Flint Reinvestment Corporation — a 501(c)(3) community development corporation — has taken a place-based, holistic approach to revitalizing the severely distressed neighborhood surrounding the North Flint Food Market site on Pierson Road near Clio Road and North Saginaw Street. This geography is identified in the city of Flint’s Imagine Flint Master Plan as one of the most underserved areas of Flint. Food scarcity is a long-standing and well-documented concern for those living in this part of town and many residents have limited transportation options for shopping elsewhere. Based on community feedback, in 2016, the North Flint Reinvestment Corporation began efforts to open a grocery store in this high-need area in a way that would support community ownership, buy-in and stewardship. This grant provides support for the pre-opening and opening expenses of the store.
