About this grant
This grant advances the goal of strengthening and expanding the digital civic space that enables the protection and promotion of human rights while fostering innovation and sustainable development. To achieve this, the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa plans to provide thought leadership, information and connections to create an enabling environment for civil society organizations in the digital space. Planned activities for 2026-27 include: 1) responding to and documenting developments related to the digital civic space; 2) providing technical support for critical human rights actors, deepening movements and partnerships; and 3) advancing public interest litigation. The grantee was established in 2004 to respond to the lack of timely and accessible information on technology-related issues. While the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa’s focus was originally on East and Southern Africa, programming has expanded across the continent in recognition of the existing gaps and has staff based in Uganda, Kenya and Cameroon.
