Protecting and Promoting Civic Space in Kenya

The project goal is to defend and promote civic space and foster a safe and enabling environment for civil society actors and frontline human rights defenders. To achieve this, the Defenders Coalition will champion the safety, security and well-being of human rights defenders, particularly marginalized and discriminated groups in Kenya by equipping them with knowledge. The grantee will provide physical protection for frontline defenders, support efforts for an enabling environment for civic space at the county and national levels, and build a strong institution to support these efforts. This work will enable human rights defenders and other civil society actors to respond to and mitigate any safety and security risks they face. Defenders Coalition is a nonprofit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. In addition, the organization strengthens the capacity of civil society actors and human rights defenders to work effectively and reduce their vulnerability to the risk of persecution.
