About this grant

The program goal is to increase direct support to local-level human rights and justice workers that tackle some of the most pressing challenges in Latin America. Justice in Motion provides legal support and information to immigrant communities and their families across the United States, Mexico and Central American borders. This is achieved through building the Defender Network, a regional coalition of legal rights experts that navigate local systems to make long lasting change. During the previous grant period, the grantee facilitated cross-border protection and legal services that reached thousands of migrants, expanded the reach and services of the Defender Network and worked to ensure that federal funding was allocated to reunifying families. During this grant period, the grantee will strengthen the Defender Network by: 1) providing transnational support for legal action; 2) building a movement of lawyers in the United States, Mexico and Central America who can work across borders to ensure portable justice; and 3) leveraging the multinational perspective and experience of staff and Defender Network to inform policies that protect migrant communities and civil society at large. Founded in 2005, the grantee was originally called Global Workers Justice Alliance and focused on providing legal assistance to migrant workers. In 2016, the grantee changed its name to Justice in Motion and expanded its mission to include humanitarian immigration and civil rights work.
