About this grant

The project goal is to leverage financing for community justice and environmental defenders in areas where their land is considered for large-scale commercial purposes. Past Mott Foundation support has helped Namati publish various toolkits on how carbon projects can benefit communities and their institutions, serving as innovative financing for their work. The grantee also convened 120 justice defenders from around the world to develop collective recommendations to the world’s largest carbon standard, called Verra. Verra has a substantial influence on actors in the carbon credit ecosystem as it provides the best standards for carbon projects. Continued support will assist Namati to build the capacity for frontline organizations to engage carbon markets, support member-led initiatives for national carbon policies, and lead on collective initiatives at a global level to shape standards. Established in 2011, Namati works to build a global movement of grassroots legal advocates who give people the power to understand, use and shape the law.
