About this grant
The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission works with tribal governments in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota to protect tribal interests in and the ecology of ceded territories in the northern portions of those states. A Commission priority is for tribes to be effective participants in permitting and environmental review processes, using science to inform decision-makers about potential impacts on tribal resources. With prior support from the Mott Foundation, the grantee expanded its water monitoring, data collection and wetland mapping. With renewed support, research will inform and enhance members’ ability to participate fully on water quality issues and ecosystem protection, while building capacity through a natural resource management internship program.
