The program goal is to achieve sustainable grassroots citizen engagement by building the capacity of civil society organizations and local communities to respond to gender-based violence, a key issue facing communities in the Northern Caucasus region of Russia. To this end, the National Center for Prevention of Violence "ANNA" and its local partners will foster community accountability — where communities themselves intervene to peacefully prevent such violence. Specifically, the grantee will raise public awareness and understanding of the issues and strengthen the capacities of nonprofits and local communities in the targeted regions actively to condemn, prevent, and combat violence against women. In 2012-2014, the grantee and its partners established community mobilization teams that work directly in local communities in the region by organizing workshops, educational activities, and community discussions. Significant progress was also made in improving networking and collaboration among local nonprofits in different parts of the Northern Caucasus engaged in the field of violence against women. Established in 1995, the National Center for Prevention of Violence "ANNA" provides social, economic, and legal assistance to women and children in crisis.
